Dental bonding is one of the most common procedures performed by dentists today to repair a corroded, chipped, cracked or tarnished tooth. The process involves applying a tooth-colored durable material and hardening with a special light that eventually bonds the material to the tooth to enhance a person’s smile.

Why it is used and what conditions it treats
Dental bonding is probably the easiest and cost-effective of cosmetic dental procedures. The following conditions can be treated with the help of bonding:

• To repair decomposed teeth.
• To repair misaligned or cracked teeth.
• To brighten a discolored teeth.
• To bridge the gap between teeth.
• To transform the shape of teeth and make it look longer.

• Some preparation is required before the dental boding process. Anesthesia is normally not required
   unless bonding is used to fill a decomposed tooth.
• At the beginning of the process, your dentist will roughen up the tooth and apply a conditioning liquid.
   These procedures help bonding material attach to the tooth. Resin is then applied, molded and softened
   to attain the desired tooth shape. Laser technology is then used to harden the material.
• A dental bonding procedure for single tooth usually takes an hour to complete.  
 

Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding

• Pros: Dental bonding is easy to perform and very light on the pockets. Unlike porcelain veneers and
   dental crowns, which are prepared in the lab, bonding for one tooth can be done in a single office visit.
   Additionally, less amount of tooth enamel is removed as compared to veneers and crowns. There is  
   minimal or no use anesthesia in dental bonding procedure.
• Cons: Although the material used for bonding process is stain defiant, it seriously lacks when compared
   to crowns. Furthermore, the bonding material is not durable as veneers and crowns are. Sometimes,
   bonding material can hurt tooth very badly.
